Meeting the future in-laws has never been so awkward…
The Family Stone may not be at the very top of most people’s festive film list but the often intense dramedy has become a Christmas classic none-the-less.
This is partly due to the gripping storyline (that often takes us to places we aren’t expecting!) and the fabulous performances by an all-star cast led by Sarah Jessica Parker and Diane Keaton.
Sadly, the incomparable Keaton passed away earlier this year (October 2025), aged 79. For that reason alone, we are sure that it will be watched by many more this Christmas and have an extra poignancy for her many fans around the world.
Here are some behind-the-scenes details you may not know about The Family Stone:
- As well as Diane Keaton and Sarah Jessica Parker, the cast includes Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson, Claire Danes, Rachel McAdams, and Craig T. Nelson.
- Luke Wilson improvised some of his dialogue as the chill brother Ben to contrast Parker’s tightly wound Meredith.
- Many of the family interactions were filmed with minimal rehearsals to preserve the natural tension and warmth of real families.
- Sarah Jessica Parker called Meredith “the most uncomfortable character” she’d ever played — and said she intentionally avoided bonding with other cast members at first to mirror her character’s outsider status.

- The scarves and layered outfits her character Diane Keaton’s character Sybil wears were partly inspired by Keaton’s real-life bohemian style.
- Several emotional scenes between Sybil and her sons were cut to keep the pacing brisk, but they remain fan favourites on the DVD extras.
- The film’s director Thomas Bezucha appears briefly as a bartender during one of the movie’s party scenes.
- The scene where Meredith drops the casserole was largely improvised — Parker really did slip, and the cast’s reactions are genuine laughter and surprise.
- Though initial reviews were mixed, the movie has since become a beloved holiday classic for its blend of humour, heartbreak, and family dynamics.
- Sarah Jessica Parker earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical.
- Fun fact: The family’s Christmas tree decorations subtly change throughout the film — a metaphor for how Meredith slowly integrates into the family.
