Christmas Kindness: Easy ways to give back this December

The best presents don’t always come with a price tag

We love the magic of December – the glow of twinkling lights, the promise of cosy nights in and the anticipation of the holiday to come. But many of us get so stressed at the thought of the presents we have to buy or the meals we have to make that we can lose sight of the best part of the season – spreading a feeling of wellbeing, fun and warmth to everyone we meet.

You might wonder, how do I do that?

It’s easier than you might think because sometimes small and thoughtful actions have the biggest impact.

If you’d like to add a little extra kindness to your holiday traditions, here are a few simple, meaningful ways to give back this December:

Share your time

Volunteer at a local animal rescue, serve at a soup kitchen, or deliver meals to those who can’t get out. Even just an hour of your day can brighten someone else’s.

Create care bundles

Fill small bags with cosy socks, gloves, snacks, or toiletries, and keep them handy to give to people experiencing homelessness.

Spread festive cheer

Pay for the coffee of the person behind you, leave a bigger tip than usual, or surprise your neighbour with fresh cookies.

Write from the heart

If you’ve written off Christmas cards, this is the year to bring them back! A handwritten card – whether to a friend, co-worker, or elderly neighbour – can mean more than a store-bought gift.

Give the gift of Christmas

Create your own mini-fundraiser in your office to ensure less well off families have everything they need to have a happy Christmas

Offer your company

Invite someone spending the holidays alone to join your family celebration, or simply call to an elderly neighbour to check in and have a cup of tea. Sometimes, kindness is as simple as making someone feel seen.

Don’t forget yourself

Show kindness inward, too – rest when you need to, enjoy your favourite traditions, and spend time with others who make you happy and content.

At the end of the day, kindness doesn’t need to be grand or expensive. This Christmas, let’s choose to celebrate not only with brightly-wrapped gifts, but with love and generosity that will linger long after the decorations have come down.
