At Christmas FM we reckon you can’t go wrong with a well chosen book as a gift.
And you can sign it with a tender message that will sit pretty on the shelf all year letting out waves of happiness each time it is opened. Bonus!
For the next week we will have a daily list of good ‘uns.
Here are a few the babies and toddlers in your life will love.
Owl Babies by Martin Waddell
Three baby owls, Sarah, Percy and Bill, wake one night in the tree where they live to discover mammy has… gone. They sit on a branch and wait. Darkness gathers and the owls become very worried, wondering when their mother will return. But, at last, she arrives, and they are overcome with joy. Such a sweet book which children can relate to – when mammy or daddy go out…they always come back. The reader is shocked and anxious with the owls but then the delicious relief when mammy comes back to take care of them. Lovely book.
Ten Little Fingers and Ten Little Toes by Mem Fox
Is there anything that can melt the heart like tiny baby fingers and fat baby toes? All over the world, babies are different but really in so many ways we are all the same with each baby having ten little fingers and ten little toes. You can incorporate wiggling fingers into the book reading, an entertaining read young children love.
Goodnight Moon by Margaret Wise Brown
This book is seventy five this year and still in print and for a very good reason. The book reads like a young child has written it. The story is a roll call of saying goodnight to everything that is in a green bedroom where a small rabbit is lying in bed with a grownup rabbit sitting beside in a rocking chair.
“Goodnight bears / Goodnight chairs / Goodnight kittens / And goodnight mittens/Good night nobody even gets a mention. Magic little book.
A Busy Day for Meow Meow by Felix Cheong
Meow Meow is a mischievous cat. The story revolves around daily activities such as waking up, eating breakfast and going to work. Your toddler will fall in love with this plucky cat. And you can get good mileage out of it and talk about it when you see cats strolling around your neighbourhood. What is Meow Meow up to now?
Caillou: I Can Do It Myself! By Christine L’heureux
The colourful and enjoyable Caillou books are all about growing up and they present the big issues of the day that matter to very young children. The stories throw up a range of childhood experiences – potty training, brushing your teeth, trying new foods and learning to share. There was a cool TV series for many years based on it too.
